THE CASTLE

In the course of the years military strategies
were planned in order to defend not only the milling industry
but also the ships that sailed off the Moorish coasts. So in
1763, the building of a castle in what is nowadays the Hotel
Santa Clara and the nearby hills of Montemar started. It had
quarters for cavalry and infantry, houses, storage rooms, chapel
and a battery of 24 pounds cannons that could reach a league
into the sea, almost 6 km. There are remains of this fortress
at the top of Montemar, in an area known as La Bateria
(the battery).
